I’ve been planning to visit Lake Clifton for weeks, just 1 hour south of Perth … but what things can you do and see there?
Well, yesterday I finally went, what a great place to spend the day!

Lake Clifton Thrombolites.

The Yalgorup Nation Park is just off the Old Coast Road, and here is where you will find the Thrombolites, they look like rocks but are 2000+ year old living microorganisms. It’s an easy stroll along a wooden boardwalk (300metres long) to see these amazing creatures. The water was crystal clear and with blue skies it is a great spot for photography and would be stunning at sunset.

Nature Trail.

The National Park has a 5km Lakeside loop trail through the bush,… only some glimpses of water and starts near the info hut. For more info see  http://trails.com.au  The trail is fairly flat with plaques about the local wildlife ( I didn’t see any wildlife… no snakes, thank goodness) and info about the trees along the way. It was a bit dry and dull in the summer, but come spring with the wildflowers  … it will be lovely.

Along the trail you will also find one of the Thomas Dambo Giants, Jyttes Hytte, another insanely awesome wooden sculpture, what an incredible talent.
Giant Jyttes Hytte

Jyttes Hytte one of the Giants of Mandurah.

Near the Giant’s entrance , there is a QR code to scan and hear the Aboriginal story of how the Waugal created the lake and thrombolites. I listened to the Dreamtime story as I walked the last few kms on the trail past the peppermint trees… the smell is divine.

Thorny Devil Brewery.

Talking about divine… after that walk you will be needing a drink or even lunch and just across the road ( you don’t even need to move the car) is the Thorny Devil Brewery. I had a very delicious lunch… the beef brisket with maple beer sauce, so yum. For more info see https://thornydevil.beer

Historical Lime Kiln

Just down the Old Coast Rd, about 8kms, is a historical site, a Lime kiln built around 1920, the idea was to heat limestones at 1500 degrees to get the lime out. Unfortunately after 2 days of trying to get the kiln to work the idea and kiln were abandoned.

The site is to the left of the info sign, don’t read the sign and walk straight past it, like I did. If you do keep walking there is a ‘talking’ circle, and plaques with more info about the kiln and finally the lake..1.2kms return.

If you are looking for something to do on the weekend, Lake Clifton is the place… thrombolites, nature trail, Giant sculpture and brewery… a great day out.
Are you travelling further down south then check out the  Margaret River Region  or Things to do and see in Busselton.
Safe travels,
